categories

Cystica- divided into two categories which are Spina Bifida with meningocele.  This form results in the membranes surrounding the spinal cord, protrude from the plane of the spine and form a sac containing cerebrospinal fluid.  Children that fit in this category are typically within the normal range of intelligence.  The second category is Spina Bifida with myelomeningocele.  This is the most severe type which results in a protruding sac that contains parts of spinal cord as well as cerebrospinal fluid.  The sac can be removed with surgery but the neurological damage is irreversible.

Occulta- a mild form of spina bifida with visible signs, if any are a clump of hair covering the area of the cleft.

Hydrocephalus:  a lack of circulation of the fluid in the brain that results in a blockage.  This creates pressure on the skull thinning the bone.  The pressure is also on the brain, which results in distortion of the brain substance, damage and death to the neurons.
